Yet another 501(c)onference update:

Ruth McCambridge of Nonprofit Quarterly will be speaking on:

Terrible and Exciting Trends Effecting the Work of Nonprofits: A View from NPQ

Image

Ruth McCambridge, Editor in Chief, Nonprofit Quarterly

There are any number of changes occurring in and around nonprofits, sparked by the economy or political discourse or technology but there may also be a larger change afoot in the way our work might better be structured. McCambridge will discuss in detail and with vivid stories the opportunities that are opening up even as many of us are faced with increasing stress and how we can best take advantage of them.

About Ruth:

Ruth McCambridge is the Editor in Chief of the Nonprofit Quarterly. NPQ tracks and provides analyses of important trends in the nonprofit sector and philanthropy, monitors public policy relative to nonprofits online and provides well tested but cutting edge information on nonprofit management both online and in its print journal which has often been called the Harvard Business Review of the nonprofit sector. NPQ works on a collaborative journalism model that invites participation from nonprofit leaders in building high quality intelligence that can be shared across boundaries of geography and field. Before taking the Nonprofit Quarterly national in 1999, McCambridge worked for twenty years in community based organizations which combined service delivery on a self-help model with social change. She also spent ten years at the Boston Foundation providing capacity building resources to nonprofits from a pool established by local public and private funding sources. The mission of NPQ is to promote active democracy through strengthening the nonprofit sector.

A Conversation with the New CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits

Jan Masaoka, CEO, California Association of Nonprofits and Blue Avocado

Image The California Association of Nonprofits has pushed the “restart button” on itself. Come for a conversation with new CEO Jan Masaoka (also of Blue Avocado and formerly CompassPoint) to hear what’s in the works, and what YOU think are the policy and leadership roles that the California Association of Nonprofits should be playing.

More about Jan:

Jan Masaoka is the new CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits whose new mission states, “We work to bring the full power of California’s nonprofits to strengthen communities.” CalNonprofits (former nickname CAN) brings nonprofit voices and perspectives to the state legislature and to philanthropy, and brings together nonprofits for joint learning and action. She also oversees the publication of Blue Avocado, an online magazine for nonprofits with provocative and practical articles, and a subscriber list of 63,000. She is the former executive director of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, and a volunteer for many nonprofits.

Nike will be leading a workshop on:

New Opportunities for Planned Giving

A fast-paced, step-by-step workshop to help nonprofits, large or small, incorporate planned giving into their ongoing fundraising efforts, with emphasis on identifying prospective givers, types of gifts and issues, handling complex gifts, forming a legacy society, and more.  Features hands-on use of a new toolkit with template materials, developed with input from local nonprofits with no current planned giving expertise or activities.

A Little Background on Nike:

Nike Irvin has more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and professional consulting to nonprofits, foundations and charitable arms of corporations and organizations. A member of the leadership team of the California Community Foundation in Los Angeles, Irvin is responsible for the priority program areas of the foundation – arts, education, health care, housing and neighborhoods, and human development, as well as several special initiatives such as the El Monte Community Building Initiative. Before joining CCF in 2011, Irvin served as president of the Riordan Foundation and prior to that, as a consultant and coach for nonprofits and foundations. Irvin serves on several nonprofit boards of directors and is a trustee for The Riordan Foundation and German Marshall Fund of the United States.  A graduate of Yale University and UCLA, she was named one of the “100 Most Inspirational Alumni” by the UCLA Anderson School of Business, and has been a recipient of numerous fellowships, including the Henry Crown Fellowship, Marshall Memorial Fellowship and Next Generation Fellowship of the American Assembly.

Nonprofit Compensation and Benefits

For the nonprofit sector, compensation and benefits can be quite a tricky road to navigate.

The Center for Nonprofit Management collects data from nonprofit organizations in Southern and Central California yearly so that we can create a helpful fiscal planning tool for 501(c) organizations looking to navigate these guidelines.

And the survey for 2012 is finally ready! Click here for the 2012 Compensation and Benefits Survey and help by being a part of this year’s results.

This survey will serve as an indispensable resource for nonprofit budget and staffing decisions with its timely and relevant data, analysis of market trends, and IRS compliance guidelines.

Make sure your organization is represented by completing the online survey NOW.

Survey results close April 6!

“CNM‘s Compensation and Benefits Survey is the tool for fiscal planning. It’s the only available source compiling current data from across the nonprofit sector. I encourage all SoCal nonprofits to participate and help make this important resource more comprehensive than ever.”

-Rod Hagenbuch, COO, Hillcrest Wells Advisors

The first 50 NEW participants receive a FREE copy of our Executive Director Bundle (includes Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer; Associate Director/Chief Operating Officer; Director, Programs), a $70 value.

For more information or if you have previously completed the survey, please contact: Emily Eisenberg at eeisenberg@cnmsocal.org

Thanks!

We Got to Talking

So marketing/design guru Marlon and I got to talking over lunch today…and we have some ideas for CNM going forward.

I think it’s truly incredible that CNM has stood as a convener, partner and leader in the nonprofit sector for three decades now. We do incredible work here and I think people need to know about it.

But we know that we could improve the way we tell the public about who we are.

When I first logged onto CNMsocal.org it took me a decent amount of time to realize what CNM was. Our website felt sterile and out-of-touch. It wasn’t until I stepped into CNM’s doors (well we don’t really have doors…the California Endowment is too state of the art for that!) that I grasped how IN-TOUCH this organization is. The people here are a wave of positive change. They’re all about empowering nonprofits by helping them with the tools, information and ideas to help them work smarter, instead of harder. Because this industry is all about doing more with less.

So we want to do an overhaul. We want CNM’s public image to reflect the passion that lives in these hallways and in this vast community.

Image

To help us get there, we’d love your suggestions. We’d love your feedback and we’d love your ideas. Everything we do has you guys in mind, so now we’re looking to understand what we can do better. And what we do well.

Lots of love on this sunny Friday in downtown Los Angeles.

Here’s to looking ahead.

Who Are We?

I figured I’d start at the beginning. Who are we?

The Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) fosters thriving communities in Southern California by ensuring that nonprofit leaders and organizations have the knowledge, skills, and resources to fulfill their mission.

To put it simply, we are here to serve the nonprofit community. We have the tools that will help your organization, but we know that you’re the ones with the passion to put it all together. In this way, I think our name is misleading. If I had it my way we’d be called the Center for Nonprofit Support. But we can’t always get what we want, can we?

In any case, we host/teach about two classes a week that dive into topics ranging from board models and marketing to social media and grant-writing. The list goes on and on.

In addition to our education courses, we offer consulting and executive board training. We’re a coach and a companion on every level throughout every step of the way.

I’m excited about CNM because I had no idea all this existed! Who knew that there were affordable classes for all this? GET ON OUR LEVEL.

:-)
